Heidi Messer (born August 28, 1969) is an American Internet entrepreneur and investor who has founded several global businesses, most notably LinkShare (sold in 2005 for $425 million) and Collective[i].[1][2][3] Messer served as a board member, President, and Chief Operating Officer of LinkShare, helping to create the sector of online marketing commonly referred to as affiliate marketing.[4][5]

Early life

Messer is the firstborn child of two entrepreneurs.[6] Her paternal and maternal grandparents were also entrepreneurs.[7] She grew up in Westchester, New York and attended Horace Greely High School in Chappaqua, New York.

College and law school

Messer received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Brown University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude.[8][9] She received her Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School graduating cum laude.[10] While at Harvard in the mid-1990s, Messer co-presented a paper to the recently appointed Justice Stephen Breyer on the impact of the Internet on existing legal frameworks.[11]

Career

Early career

Throughout high school and college, Messer worked in her family’s real estate and maintenance business. After graduating from Harvard, Messer accepted a position as an attorney at the law firm Baker & Botts, LLP in their New York office.[10]

LinkShare Corporation

In 1996, Messer and her brother Stephen Messer recognized a core problem that existed on the World Wide Web making it difficult to value online traffic.[12] They set out to create an online distribution network that would allow websites to monetize their traffic through performance based links.[13] The sister and brother team recruited Cheryl Ho and Horace Meng to help create LinkShare Corporation.[6]

LinkShare is known for the launch of the LinkShare Network™, the first affiliate network,[13] as well as search marketing (SEM), and lead generation.[14] LinkShare was founded and headquartered in New York City.[15] A short list of LinkShare’s clients include Dell Computers, Walmart, Disney, Apple Inc., Carlson Companies, and Target Corporation.[16]

In 1998, LinkShare received a venture capital investment from Internet Capital Group (ICG) and Comcast (CMCSA).[13] Doug Alexander (ICGE) and Julian Brodsky (CMSCA) joined the board of directors.[17][18] In 1999, Martin Pompadur (then Vice Chairman of News Corp Europe) joined the board of directors and Mitsui and Co., the global Japanese trading company, became an investor.[10] That same year, the company was awarded the ground-breaking patent (No. 5,991,740) covering the "data processing system for integrated tracking and management of commerce related activities on a public access network."[19]

In 2000, LinkShare expanded offices into Japan through a joint venture with Mitsui and Co. Over the next five years, LinkShare expanded into Canada and the United Kingdom.[20]

Messer served as President and COO of LinkShare until its sale in 2005 to Rakuten Inc. for $425 million.[21][22] In 2006, Messer exited the company, which was later renamed Rakuten LinkShare.[23][24]

Collective[i]

In 2008, Messer co-founded Cross Commerce Media with her husband, Tad Martin and brother.[25] She currently serves on its board of directors as the company’s Chairman.[26] Cross Commerce Media operates a set of sales, marketing, customer support, and services analytical applications called Collective[i].[2][27] Collective[i] hosts the industry's first data analytics network that automates the work associated with analyzing Big Data while also socializing knowledge and discussion throughout an enterprise. Business leaders gain instant access via the cloud to distilled, standardized, and unified data insights through Collective[i]'s platform that includes a data warehouse, engine for data integration, data-mining, analytics, and visualizations.[28][29] Messer and her co-founders collaborated with leading data scientists and PhD-level technology developers in building Collective[i].[25]

In 2014, Messer was awarded two patents in conjunction with Collective[i]'s data analytics network. She is noted as a co-inventor for patent #8,713,076[30] and patent #8,825,716,[31] "Providing a Multi-Tenant Knowledge Network".

Angel investing, board affiliations and community involvement

Messer is co-founder and CEO of World Evolved, a platform for global investment and expansion.[32][33] She is also a founding member of the Zokei Network, an invitation only global network of leading artists, technologists, scientists, and business leaders who convene for inspiration in small private salons around the world.[7] Messer is an active angel investor in numerous startups including Spire,[34] Lifebooker, and DoDo Case.[35] Additionally, she serves on the board of Alliance Bernstein.[36][37]

Messer serves on the Brown Women’s Leadership Counsel[9] and advisory boards for Netplenish,[38] the Brown Entrepreneurship Program,[39][40] the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins,[41] Dell Computers,[42] NBC Universal,[43] and American Express OPEN.[44]

Messer’s mentors include Julian Brodsky (the co-founder of Comcast Corporation) and Richard Parsons (former Chairman of AOL Time Warner).[45]

Messer is active in the New York City tech community. She serves on the board of the Partnership for New York City and has been a judge and mentor in the NYC Venture Fellows Program.[46][47]

The reception for these works benefited the Challenger Center for Space Science Exploration and featured the astronaut Buzz Aldrin.[94]
