Hayes FM (91.8 FM) is a community-focused local radio station based in Hayes, West London, England.

Audience

The target audience is people who live and work within a three mile radius of the centre of Hayes in the south of the London Borough of Hillingdon.

The station is non-commercial - it is not obligated to sell advertisements in order to remain operational. This gives autonomy with format, allowing a variety of tastes and musical genres to be accommodated in programming. For example, Hughie Dixon plays indie rock 9-11 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, Mandeep Panesar showcases urban music 9-11 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, and Pete Dicks presents Beatles and Beyond - Europe's longest running Beatles-themed radio show[1] - from 11 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington, does a weekly show 10 a.m.-12 noon on Mondays, discussing with Kaashif Awan local stories and the week ahead in Parliament.[2]

History

Hayes FM was launched out of an initiative between Sutish Sharma, who at that time was working for the BBC, and local MP John McDonnell.[3] The initiative's aim was to contribute towards engaging the three West London boroughs' different communities.

In 2003, Hayes FM undertook a Restricted Service Licence for one month. In 2004, the station developed accredited training courses, and in November of that year submitted an application to Ofcom for a local radio licence. Hayes FM was awarded a radio operators licence in 2006; it started broadcasting on 1 September 2007.[4]

Former Presenters include Anu Baines (Radio Jackie), Graham Kirk (Redstone FM) and Brooke Burfitt (BBC Guernsey).
