The Hartford Fire Department "HFD" provides fire protection and first responder emergency medical services to the city of Hartford, Connecticut, United States.[1][2] The Hartford Fire Department is one of three ISO Class 1-rated fire departments in New England, as well as Milford, Connecticut and Cambridge, Massachusetts Fire Departments.

One of the largest fire departments in the state of Connecticut, in 2013, the Hartford Fire Department responded to 23,053 emergency calls.[3]

Organization

The Hartford Fire Department is sub-divided into 2 main fields of operations: Emergency Services and Support Services. Under the command of the Support Services Division are the Employee Assistance Program(E.A.P.),[4] and the Fire Administration staff, also known as the Executive Office.[5] Under the command of the Support Services Division are the Community Risk Reduction Division(also known as the Fire Marshal's Office),[6] the Equipment Maintenance Division,[7] the Fire Alarm Communications Technology(F.A.C.T.) Division,[8] the Fire Training Division, under the command of a Deputy Chief, two Captains, and four Lieutenants, and the Management Services Division.[9] Also under the Support Services Division is the Fire Prevention Division, commanded by a Fire Marshal, a Deputy Fire Marshal, and 6 Fire Prevention Lieutenants.[10] Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, is the Special Services Unit, commanded by a Captain and two Lieutenants.

The HFD currently operates out of 12 Fire Stations, located throughout the city, in 2 Districts, under the command of a Deputy Fire Chief. The Hartford Fire Department also operates and maintains a fire apparatus fleet of 11 Engines, 5 Ladders, 1 Tactical Unit(Rescue), and numerous Special, Support, and Reserve Units. Each front line piece of fire apparatus is staffed by a minimum crew of four (4) firefighters, including a driver and an officer.

During large storms or special events, 2 Engines(E4, E6), 1 Ladder(L1), and 1 District(D3) are activated by additional personnel. All of these units have been deactivated, and the units numbers are only re-activated in such a situation.

Staffing

Each piece of frontline apparatus is staffed with a minimum of 4 Firefighters, including a Driver and an Officer. Each Engine and Ladder Company, and the Tac. Unit is staffed with 2 Firefighters, 1 Driver, and 1 Lieutenant or Captain per shift. Each District Chief's Unit is staffed by a Deputy Chief and an Aide.

Other Facilities

In addition to the 12 Fire Stations, the HFD also operates several other facilities, including a Fire Headquarters Administrative Facility at 253 High St., Downtown. This facility is part of the city of Hartford's Public Safety Complex, which houses the Headquarters for both the Fire and Police Departments, as well as the Telecommunications Division, or Fire Dispatch.

There is also a Fire Apparatus Maintenance and Fire Training Facility located at 1 Fischer Rd.
