Harris Technology Pty Ltd. is an Australian electronics retailer owned and operated by Officeworks, a subsidiary of Wesfarmers.

Early history

Harris Technology was started by Ron Harris on 6 October 1986. After a trip to the USA, it became apparent that the IT Retail market in Australia would be receptive to a computer superstore. Harris Technology opened its first Superstore in North Sydney, under the Bayer Building (formerly Mann Building then Konika Building).

On 1 April 1999, Coles Myer acquired Harris Technology. Since then, Harris Technology expanded with business centres in four Australian states and one territory and a website including detailed information on more than 15,000 technology products (as of Aug 2006), and has become one of Australia’s major resellers of technology to small and medium businesses.

Locations

In late 2008 Harris Technology reduced the number of business centres it operated from 11 to 5 (one in each major capital except Adelaide), placing more focus on their direct retail channels (i.e.: phone, fax and internet orders).

In January 2012, the company again reduced the number of business centres, retaining only the Fortitude Valley and North Ryde locations. The former three business centres in Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT were replaced by order collection arrangements through nearby Officeworks stores.

In October 2014, the company closed its last remaining business centre in North Ryde, NSW, shifting to an online only focus. All former business centres have now been replaced with "Click and Collect" arrangements using Officeworks stores located close to its former Business Centre locations.

Business Focus

Harris Technology has a small/medium business and retail focus, with sales teams, websites and stores designed to appeal to this market. Their product range includes computers, networking, storage, printing, accessories, servers, software and licensing, sold through retail stores, contact centres and online.

Harris Technology works alongside a range of major vendors in the IT industry, including Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Microsoft, Acer, Toshiba, Samsung and many more. In mid-2006 Harris Technology expanded the reselling of Apple products, expanding from just iPods to the entire range of Apple products including the Macintosh.
