"Happiness" (Hangul: 행복; RR: Haengbok) is the debut single by South Korean girl group Red Velvet, released on August 4, 2014. The song was penned by Yoo Young-jin and composed by Will Simms, Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), Chris Holsten and Anne Judith Wik (Dsign Music).
Background and release
"Happiness" was co-produced by Will Simms (who also worked with Exo and Girls' Generation) and Chad Hugo (The Neptunes). It was described as an urban Europop song with a strong synth sound and an African tribal beat.[2]
The album was digitally released on August 4, 2014, and was released worldwide through iTunes, Melon, Genie, and other online music portals. The group's first live performance was August 1, 2014 on KBS Music Bank, followed by MBC Music Core on the 2nd and SBS Inkigayo on the 3rd.[3]
The original music video for "Happiness" had more than 2 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours before being removed (due to controversy over problematic images) and replaced with an edited version. The current version has over 9 million views as of November 2014.[4] It was the second-most viewed K-pop music video worldwide for the month of August.[1]
Critics
Reception to the song was critically mixed. Jacques Petersen of Popdust wrote: "Happiness is an experimental mish-mash of different sounds and styles that you wouldn't expect to work, but somehow does. One minute it's trap, the next it's like Avicii's folk-EDM, until it all just sounds like one big bouncy piece of addictive bubblegum".
