Hanwell (2011 pop.: 4,266) is a Canadian suburban community in York County, New Brunswick on Route 640.

Hanwell is a newly incorporated Rural Community after being a local service district for many years. It lies immediately southwest of Fredericton and is a rapidly growing suburb/exurb for that city.

Formerly a farming community, two large residential subdivisions were constructed in Hanwell in the 1970s. Hanwell is the location of Kingswood Park, a large entertainment centre and golf course.

Hanwell became an incorporated municipality as a Rural Community on May 23, 2014 under New Brunswick Regulation 2014-30 of the Municipalities Act, with Mayor and Council elected in May and taking the Oath of Office on May 27, 2014.

First Council consists of Mayor Susan Cassidy, Deputy Mayor Holly Hyslop, and Councillors Susan Jonah, Darren MacKenzie, Chris Melvin, and Carla Ward.

Hanwell includes a 200 Acre community park - The Hanwell Recreational Park - with three trail systems (2km, 3km, and 4km distances).

History

Hanwell was named by Thomas Baillie, who was born at Hanwell, West London, England. In 1825 Baillie brought Irish immigrants over to settle in the area.[1]
