"Hanky Panky" is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna. It was the second and final single release from her soundtrack album I'm Breathless (Music from and Inspired by the film Dick Tracy) on June 30, 1990 by Sire Records. The song caused some controversy because of its innuendo and racy lyrics. It became a top-ten hit in many countries including Australia, Ireland, Italy, Finland, the United Kingdom and the United States, while peaking within the top 20 in other nations.
No official video was made for "Hanky Panky"; instead, a live performance of the song from the Blond Ambition Tour, was used. Madonna has performed the song in two of her tours, first on the 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour, and 14 years later on 2004's Re-Invention World Tour. The song was performed on the season 3 finale of Ally McBeal entitled "The Musical, Almost".
Critical reception
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic highlighted the song and called it "double entendre-laden hit "Hanky Panky."[1] Robert Christgau called this song "such fake period piece" but praised "the risque s&m-lite" song as "all her."[2] Rolling Stone's Mark Coleman wrote that this song does not have disco influence like most songs by Madonna had in that time and he added "titles alone are enough to conjure up visions of the elaborate production numbers on Madonna's summer tour."[3] Sal Cinquemani wrote that this song "cheeky" and that Madonna would explore this kind of song in late 90's.[4]
Chart performance
In the United States "Hanky Panky" entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 40 the week of June 30, 1990, while "Vogue" was slowly descending from the chart. The single eventually peaked at number ten, and was certified Gold by the RIAA on September 19, 1990. In the United Kingdom it peaked at number two and was certified gold by the BPI on August 1, 1990.[5] According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 210,000 copies there.[6]
In Australia it peaked at number six and came in at number 45 on the year end chart. It also reached the top ten in Ireland, Italy, and South Africa, and topped the charts in Finland.
Elsewhere in the world it typically peaked somewhere within the top 20 on the charts. "Hanky Panky" was the first Madonna single since "Like a Virgin" not to chart in the French official singles chart, in part because very few copies of the vinyl format of the single were available in stores.
