The Hanikra border clash was the shooting death of an Israeli soldier and subsequent counter-attack that ensued wounding a Lebanese soldier. The incident took place in the Rosh Hankira, known as HaKira locality kibbutz on the Lebanese-Israeli border.[2] According to Lebanese authorities the soldier who shot and killed the IDF servicemen acted independently without orders to shoot.[3] This was listed as the first deadly encounter between both sides since 2010.

On 15 December 2013, around 8:30 pm, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) Master Sergeant Shlomi Cohen, 31,[1] was shot dead by a Lebanese army sniper while driving solo a military vehicle between the Rosh HaKira border crossing outpost.[4] The bullets struck him and his jeep 6-7 times on the Israeli side of the fenced Blue Line.[1]

A few hours following Sergeant Cohen's death, a quick response was initiated by the IDF in the area. Two Lebanese soldiers were fired upon based on "suspicious activities" at the scene of the border shooting, wounding a Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) soldier.[1]

Aftermath

The LAF sniper marksmen responsible for the killing was detained by Lebanese authorities who admitted the soldier of disobeying orders to engage. According to the Lebanese PM Najib Mikati the soldier will be held accountable for his actions.[5]
