Hamilton Jewelers is an American fine jewelry, luxury timepiece and home decor company. Since 2010, the firm has created the Liberty Medal, [1]

History

Founded in 1912[2] as Geo. Marks Inc., the company was purchased by Irving Siegel in 1927 and is currently a third-generation, family-owned business. In 1947, a fire from a neighboring clothing store caused extensive damage to Hamilton’s original 122 South Broad Street location with company repairs and remodels lasting through 1950. Then, in 1957, the Hamilton store was destroyed in a fire, which devastated a main shopping area of Trenton, New Jersey. Irving Siegel’s son, Martin, now Chairman, joined the business in 1955 and was followed by his son, Hank, the current President and CEO, 27 years later.[3][4]

The oldest Hamilton Jewelers retail location was in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. After forty years of operation, it was closed in June 2013.[5] That store opened in 1973 just three years before the Palm Beach, Florida location. In 1985, Hamilton opened their Princeton location in Lower Pyne,[6] a building that once served as a dormitory for Princeton University, followed in 1988 by the Palm Beach Gardens location. The Palm Beach Gardens location was remodeled in 1992, 1998 and 2010.[7][8] The last addition to the company was the Red Bank[9] store in 2003. That store closed in 2014.[10]

The company celebrated their 100-year anniversary in 2012 by publishing a coffee table book commemorating its history.[11]

Affiliations

It is one of the 25 retail firms certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council[12][13] an international non-profit organization representing over 60 member companies. They achieved re-certification from the Responsible Jewellery Council in November 2014.[14] The firm has also been featured in media outlets including The New York Times.[15]

The firm has membership and association with the industry's organizations, including the Jewelers Vigilance Committee,[16] Gemological Institute of America,[17] Jewelers of America,[18] Florida Luxury Marketing Council,[19] and American Watch Guild.[20]
