Hamid Guska

Hamid Guska (born February 15, 1953 in Glavatičevo) is a boxing coach and former boxer from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Boxing career

He started his amateur boxing career in 1974 in BK Partizan Sarajevo. The club was later renamed in BK Željezničar and became member of SD Željezničar. His boxing career ended 1980 due to an arm injury. One year later he was named as chief coach of BK Željezničar.

Chief coach of BK Željezničar

Under his guidance the club managed its first promotion in history, having won the 2nd Yugoslavia league in 1986. In the following years BK Željezničar was one of the strongest teams in Yugoslavia.

Several boxers of BK Željezničar have been Yugoslavian Champions and medal winners at major international boxing tournaments.[1][2] Hamid Guska trained a large number of notable boxers : Fikret Kadić,[1] Almedin Fetahović, Stephen Mwema,[3] David Ouma,[4] Zijad Hodžić,[5] Vibor Ćorković, Predrag Bartula,[2] Zaim Numanović,[5] Kazimir Radoš, Rifet Kadić, Ibro Jakupović, Afrim Majanci,[5] Ramiz Aljić, Mustafa Mrkulić, Izet Mrkulić, Mensur Peljto,[6] Draženko Đokić, Muhamed Jeleč, Mergim Šalja, Said Čolpa and[7] Edin Bajrić. However, BK Željezničar ceased to exist due to the Bosnian War

Bosnia and Herzegovina

1993 Guska was named as coach of newly founded Bosnia and Herzegovina Boxing National team. On the Mediterranean Games 1993. in France, Almedin Fetahović, a member of BK Željezničar, won the gold medal in light middleweight. It was the first gold medal ever for Bosnia and Herzegovina at a major international multi-sport event. Hamid Guska also guided Bosnian National team on its first participation at the 1993 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Bursa Edin Bajrić was stopped in Preliminaries losing to Danny Williams from United Kingdom in heavyweight.[8]

He was absent from Bosnian boxing until 2001. when Sarajevo was chosen to host European Junior Boxing Championships[9] and Hamid Guska was named as Youth Head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Aldin Avdić managed to win bronze medal in super heavyweight, first ever for Bosnia at any European Amateur Boxing Championships.

From 2002. – 2009. Guska was Head coach of all Bosnian national boxing teams. In this period Bosnian boxers managed to win four bronze medals at big boxing events :

Hamid Guska is the most successful Bosnian boxing coach ever having won four medals on European Amateur Boxing Championships and two medals on Mediterranean Games.

In August 2009 he was succeeded by Anton Josipović as Head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[14]

Success at Pan Arab Games

Guska was named as Chief Coach of United Arab Emirates boxing team for the 2004. Pan Arab Games in Algeria. Ali Khalfan Ali won bronze medal in featherweight and became first Emirati boxer ever to win a medal at a major international multi-sport event.[15] After the 2004 Pan Arab Games he returned to Bosnia and continued his work as Head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
