Hamburger button

Hamburger button is the name commonly used for a control element in graphical user interfaces. The button consists of three parallel horizontal lines, often displayed in the top left or top right of a user interface.[1] The element is given this name for its purported resemblance to a hamburger, the top and bottom lines representing the hamburger's bun and its middle line representing the hamburger's filling.[2]

History

The icon was designed by Norm Cox as part of the user interface for the Xerox Star.[3]

Use

Selection of a hamburger button typically results in a menu of pages or options.[1][2]

Hamburger buttons have been criticized as a "poor design choice" in apps for mobile devices.[4]
