HMS Mary Galley (1744)

HMS Pomone, here used as an indicator of a fifth rate ship

HMS Mary Galley was a 44-gun fifth rate, built and launched in 1744 in Rotherhithe, and sunk as a breakwater in 1764.[1] Captain William Dandridge, (who was the brother of John Dandridge, who was the father of Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, who was the wife of American President George Washington) was given command of the ship in July 1744. He died at sea little more than a month later, on 28 August, near Greenwich, England.[2]

In 1744, William Dandridge was appointed as Captain of the ship in July at Deptford. John Scott was appointed master on the 13 August. On 20 April 1764, officers at Plymouth Dockyard recorded "The Mary Galley has been placed as a breakwater."
