HMMGG Festival
The HMMGG Festival is an annual event held near Minocqua, Wisconsin, featuring visionary visual and performance art. The event has been held in the fall of each year since its founding in 1986 by a group of Beloit College graduates. The festival, sometimes referred to as Burning He-Man North (a reference to the Burning Man Festival held in Nevada),(AntiProTechnology Curator's Introduction, museum exhibition catalog, Nicolet College Gallery, 2002) features a variety of primarily performance art often with a rustic tongue-in-cheek misogynistic or pyrotechnic theme.
During a brief period of time in the late 1980s and early 1990s the event was open to public participation but in the mid-1990s it reverted to its roots as an invitation-only event. Although participants are not publicly listed, it is believed that past and long-time participants are noteworthy in their respective fields of art, museum management, computer design, and game design.(AntiProTechnology museum exhibition, Nicolet College Gallery, 2002)
In addition to original art, the HMMGG Festival typically includes excursions to the nearby Lake Superior region for the inspiration and creation of work en plein air, as well as viewing of contemporary dance performances in Hurley and Eagle River, Wisconsin.
