H. Edward Flentje, PhD (born August 26, 1942) is an American educator at Wichita State University, who has served multiple positions across the state of Kansas. Most recently, he has served as the Interim President at Emporia State University and before that, Interim City manager for Wichita, KS in 2008.[1]

Biography

Education

Flentje earned his bachelor’s degree in education in math and physical science in 1964 from the Kansas State Teachers College, now Emporia State University. He earned a master’s degree in government from George Washington University in 1965 and a Ph.D. in political science from The University of Kansas in 1970.[1]

Career

Higher education

After graduating from George Washington University, Flentje spent five years in Illinois. In Illinois, he served as wither a visiting professor or professor at several institutions including City Colleges of Chicago from 1970 to 1971, Southern Illinois University from 1972 to 1975, and was a lecturer of political science at The University of Kansas in 1976.In 1979, Flentje started full-time at Wichita State University as a visiting research and associate professor, and than later promoted to a professor in 1986 in the Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs.[2] In the summer of 1993, Flentje was a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1999, Flentje was promoted to Director of the Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs, where he served for nine years.[3]

Other careers

Flentje served as a cabinet officer and state agency head under two Kansas governors.[4] From 1986 to 1988, he chaired the transition and served as secretary of administration for Gov. Mike Hayden, and from 1975 to 1979 he served as the director of state planning and research for Gov. Robert Bennett.[5]

Interim careers

In 2008, Flentje was named the interim city manager for Wichita, Kansas, after George Kolb took the interim job at Valley Center, Kansas.[6] Flentje served from January 2 to July 11, 2008. On July 1, 2011, Flentje started his five month career as the interim president of Emporia State. He served until December 31, 2011.[7]
