Hōzuki no Reitetsu (Japanese: 鬼灯の冷徹) is a Japanese supernatural dark comedy manga series written and illustrated by Natsumi Eguchi. Its plot turns around Hōzuki, a demon who works for the King and Head Judge of hell. It has been serialized by Kodansha in the magazine Weekly Morning since March 2011, with chapters collected in sixteen tankōbon volumes as of November 2014. Wit Studio adapted the manga into a 2014 anime television series and three original animation DVDs (OADs).

The anime was made available to English-speaking audiences through Crunchyroll, which streamed it, and Sentai Filmworks, which licensed the series to be released on DVD. In Japan, the Hōzuki no Reitetsu manga has sold over 7.5 million copies as of July 2014. The manga and anime have been featured at various times in weekly top ten lists of best-seling in their respective media.

Plot

The story centers on demon Ogre Hōzuki who works with King Enma, the King and Head Judge of Hell, and other demons in the Japanese hell. The serious-minded Hōzuki attempts to manage and troubleshoot unusual problems which occur there.

A top-ranked demon who is the first advisor to King Yama. He solves the many problems in Hell. He also raises Goldfish plants and carries an metal club as a weapon.[ep 1]
King Yama (閻魔大王 Enma-Daiō)

The Great King of Hell. He judges the dead and determines what kind of hell they will be sent to.[ep 2]
Karauri (唐瓜 Karauri)
Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara[1]
A worker in Hell. He wants to work in Shugou Hell and has a crush on Oko.
Nasubi (茄子 Nasubi)
Voiced by: Tōko Aoyama[1]
A worker in hell. He is easily distracted and cannot focus for long periods of time. He loves to sing.[ep 2]
Hakutaku (白澤 Hakutaku)
Voiced by: Kōji Yusa[1]
A Celestial Beast who works at Shangri-La. He is knowledgeable on Chinese medicine and loves to hit on women.[ep 3]
Okō (お香 Okō)
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura[1]
The chief assistant of Mortal Hell. She is very pretty and sweet, causing Karauri to have a crush on her.[ep 2]
Momotarō (桃太郎 Momotarō)
Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa[1]
A famous samurai in his days of living.[ep 1] Used to be very prideful of his past but after he started working in Shangri-La, he became more docile.[ep 3]
Shiro (シロ Shiro)
Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi[1]
A white dog who is a companion of Momotaro. He works in Animal Cruelty Hell to punish those who were abusive towards animals.[ep 1]
Kakisuke (柿助 Kakisuke)
Voiced by: Hiroki Gotō[1]
A monkey who is another companion of Momotaro. He was sued by the crab family because he abused them with persimmons.[ep 1]
Rurio (ルリオ Rurio)
Voiced by: Takashi Matsuyama[1]
A pheasant who is a companion of Momotaro. He gets extremely hurt when Hozuki says that he doesn’t think much of him.[ep 1]
Peach Maki (ピーチ・マキ Pīchi Maki)
Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka[1]
A famous idol in Hell. She disguises herself in public by wearing peach merchandise, such as peach earrings. This disguise proves to be ineffective when Hozuki discovers her identity quickly. [ep 6]
Karashi (芥子 Karashi)
Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki[1]
The rabbit from the story “Fire-Crackle Mountain.” Her motto is “slow retribution.” She has a huge grudge against the tanuki in Fire-Crackle Mountain and goes crazy every time the tanuki is mentioned.[ep 4]
Yoshitsune Minamoto (源義経 Minamoto no Yoshitsune)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji[1]
A commander in the Crow-Tengu Police. He is also pretty boy who appears in posters and TV commercials due to his slender build.[ep 4]

Manga

Written and illustrated by Natsumi Eguchi, the manga series Hōzuki no Reitetsu is serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Morning seinen magazine since March 3, 2011.[2] It has been collected into seventeen tankōbon volumes by Kodansha; the first was released on May 23, 2011 and the seventeenth was released on February 23, 2015.[3][4] In addition to the regular edition, some volumes were also released in a "limited edition" (限定版 Genteiban) accompanied by new cover artworks and series-related merchandise.[5][6] A comic and anime official guidebook was also published by Kodansha on February 3, 2014.[7]

A special chapter was released in Kodansha's Nakayoshi on December 27, 2014.[8]

Anime

An anime adaptation of Hōzuki no Reitetsu was first announced through Morning '​s 31st issue in June 2013.[24] The exhibition of the anime's first promotional video took placed in July at Japan Expo in Paris and Anime Expo in Los Angeles.[25] After the announcement of the cast, a new promotional video was released on the anime's official site in August.[25] The anime's staff was disclosed in October, when a stage event in Minato, Tokyo previewed its first episode.[25][26] A third promotional video and a television commercial were publicized in November along with its opening theme.[27] In December, a pair of new commercials were released.[28]

The Hōzuki no Reitetsu anime series was produced by Wit Studio and directed by Hiro Kaburaki, with screenplay by Midori Gotō and characters design by Hirotaka Katō.[29] It was broadcast by Mainichi Broadcasting System's programming block Animeism[30] from January 10, 2014 to April 4, 2014.[note 1] The entire series was released by King Records from April 9 to August 13, 2014 both in DVD and Blu-ray with an "A" and "B" version for each one of the six compilations.[note 2][note 3]

The series was simulcasted by Crunchyroll and was available for several countries, including the English-speaking United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.[29] Sentai Filmworks licensed the series to the North American market in January 2014.[29] Under the title of Hozuki's Coolheadedness, the anime is set to be released on a Blu-ray Disc on February 17, 2015.[39] At the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in April 2015, Madman Entertainment announced the series's licensing.[40]

In June 2014, a series of three original anime DVDs (OADs) was announced to be produced by the same staff of the anime series.[41] After the release of three teaser videos in August, October and November,[42][43][44] the OADs were screened between December 6 to December 28, 2014 in eleven theaters in Japan.[45] They are set to be released along with the 17th, 18th, and 19th manga volumes on February 23, May 22, and August 21, 2015 respectively.[41]

In the second half, Hozuki shows the workers the kinds of hell in order to get them to do their jobs properly. Later, a rabbit from a gruesome story book visits the workers.

The idol, Peach Maki, is introduced. She tells journalist Koban, who specializes in gossip, to never go near her. Koban then sets his eyes on Hozuki as his future scoop. Hozuki then finds himself sitting next to Peach Maki on a train. In the second half, Beelzebub, Satan’s right hand man, visits Japanese Hell.

However, Nasubi feels like his pizzaz is missing. A 200 year old mural is falling apart so Hozuki asks Nasubi to repaint the mural.

Hakutaku drinks too much and ends up having a major hangover. He ends up going to Mortal Hell to drink some more and runs into Hozuki. In the second half, Hozuki sets off to fix a problem in Screaming Hell, the hell for violent drunkards. The deceased in Screaming Hell have stolen sake from Orochi, the eight-headed dragon.

Hozuki helps out at Abbreviated Hell, where criminals who were given a proper burial and sacrifices are deemed worthy enough to go to Heaven or be reincarnated. The only catch is that they have to suffer one punishment. Hozuki then goes off for a get-together with the Ten Kings of the Afterlife. In the second half, King Yama is out of shape and fatter. Hozuki decides to help King Yama lose weight and go on a diet.

Hozuki tells the story of the Inch-High Samurai. After finding out that the Inch-High Samurai is in Hell, Hozuki takes Shiro, his nieces, and his nephews to meet the famous character. In the second half, Kodama, a tree spirit of the mountain, tells Hozuki that he cannot stay in the mountains. Kodama tells him that Princess Rock, the daughter of the Mountain God, is terrorizing the mountain after being called “ugly.”

Lady Lilith attempts to make a move on Hozuki so he introduces her to Hakutaku. Hakutaku and Lady Lilith get along right away. Hozuki runs into Beelzebub. Beelzebub challenges Hozuki to many games. In the second half, Hakutaku retells the story of the Yellow Emperor.

Audio

The Hōzuki no Reitetsu anime series's music was composed by Tomisiro under Starchild Records, while Sound Team Don Juan produced the sound.[29] The series uses "Jigoku no Sata mo Kimi Shidai" (地獄の沙汰も君次第) as its opening theme; it is interpreted by the series' main cast members under the name Jigoku no Sata All Stars (地獄の沙汰オールスターズ Jigoku no Sata, lit. "Hell's Judgment All Stars").[27] It was released on February 19, 2014, and was followed by the series's ending theme, "Parallax View" (パララックス・ビュー Pararakkusu Byū) by Sumire Uesaka, on March 5, 2014.[47][48] Another song from the series, "Ake! Jigoku no Kama no Futa" (開け!地獄の釜の蓋), was released on June 1, 2014.[49] The anime soundtrack album was released on December 3, 2014 into two version; one with only the CD and another with a CD and DVD.[50][51] The OAD's theme, "Enma Daiō ni Kiite Goran" (閻魔大王に訊いてごらん) by Uesaka, was released on December 12, 2014.[52]

An online radio program was and broadcast by Animate TV between December 28, 2013 and April 6, 2014, lasting thirteen episodes.[53][54] The show, titled "Hito ni Kibishiku" (ひとにきびしく), was hosted by Hiroki Yasumoto, Hōzuki's voice actor, and received the other anime's voice actors as guest.[53][54]

Reception

As of July 2014, Hōzuki no Reitetsu '​s first fourteen volumes have sold over 7.5 million copies in Japan.[55] Several volumes of the series have been featured on Oricon's weekly chart of the best-selling manga; all volumes since the fifth one have reached the top 10.[note 5] Volumes 11, 12 and 13 ranked 59th, 67th and 62nd respectively on the list of best-selling manga volumes in the first half of 2014.[68] Hōzuki no Reitetsui was the eleventh best-selling manga series of 2014, with over 4.3 million copies sold.[69] Additionally, the series's guidebook also entered the top 25 of the first week of February with 20,000 copies sold.[70]

The 2012 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, which surveys people in the manga and publishing industry, named Hōzuki no Reitetsu the nineteenth best manga series for male readers.[71] In 2012, it was one of the 15 manga nominated for the 5th Manga Taishō and was selected by jury for the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards.[25] The series was nominated for the 38th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga,[72][73] and ranked fifth on the "Book of the Year by Media Factory's Da Vinci in 2014.[74]

All the six compilation of the anime series were featured both on Oricon's weekly chart of the best-selling DVD and Blu-ray, reaching the top 10 in both categories.[note 6] Its two first volumes were released on the same day and they ranked first and second on the DVD list, while were second and third on the Blu-ray list.[75][76] The first DVD, the fifth Blu-ray and the sixth DVD volumes topped the list.[75][82][83] In a survey by Rekochoku with 500 men and women between the ages of 10 and 50, Hōzuki no Reitetsu was voted the best anime that starte in January 2014.[85] Asking the same question the site Animeanime.jpg received over 2800 votes, and the anime was the fourth most voted in general, while was atop among women.[86][87]
