Gursarai is a city and a municipal board in Jhansi district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
History
The town was created after a grant of land was made to Mukundraj Kher, chef of the Peshwas of Malwa for his service during the second battle of Tarain. Mukundraj is widely credited as having accidentally won the battle for the peshwas by food poisoning the General of the later mughals when he visited the court of the Peshwas. An act which had the immediate consequence of the withdrawal of Mughal armies from the borders of the Malwa empire.
A statue stands in the main square at Gursarai commemorating the accidental bravery of Mukundraj.
Geography
Gursarai is located at 25°37′N 79°11′E / 25.62°N 79.18°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 174 metres (570 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Gursarai had a population of 50,000. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Gursarai has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 56%. In Gursarai, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. The municipality has 25 wards.

The water supply arrangement of this city is from a pond at Bhasneh Village at 8 km from Gursarai. From the last three years this town is suffering from acute water crisis.
People and Culture
People of this town are calm. They are so busy in there life even two months of electricity dropout does not make them angry .There is no big public sector unit or Industries in the town, so life is a bit slow there.If You want to see prosperity of this town come here via poonch-Gursarai road and then you will going to enjoy the feelings of hell on earth . Gursarai has everything people need there. Colleges, Kher Inter College (since 1949) and Govt. Girls Inter College are two prestigious colleges.
Young crowd use to gather at some common place such as GIC Ground and Siddan Temple (2 km from town), an old Durga Mata Temple, also have historical temple that left by old person.
