School's history
Established in 1926 by Arthur Gulliver in the residential section of Coconut Grove, Gulliver Academy initially enrolled students from New England who were wintering in South Florida.
The school was purchased by Marian Krutulis in late 1953. In 1967, Mrs. Krutulis moved the school to South Dade. Centered in Coral Gables, there are four campuses today, each serving a specific age group or targeting a particular student interest or need.
Gulliver Academy serves students in Grades PreK3 - 8. Gulliver South Miami Campus, which began operations in 1994, provided a gymnastic program for Grades Sr.K - 4. After 17 years of operation, the South Miami Campus closed its doors in June 2011. Gulliver Preparatory School, opened in 1975 for advanced students in Grades 9 - 12. Gulliver’s Montgomery Drive and Miller Drive campuses offer smaller classes and alternative teaching and learning styles to students in Grades 5 - 8 and 9 - 12, respectively.
With an enrollment of more than 2,200, Gulliver Schools offers academic and extracurricular programs. Middle and high school students who require close attention spend the morning at the Montgomery Drive and Miller Drive campuses, and are transported to the Academy or the Preparatory main campuses for lunch, afternoon courses, and extracurricular activities.
In 2000, Gulliver Schools became a 501(c) (3) non-profit institution. The Board has contracted School Management Systems, Inc., a Florida corporation owned and operated by John Krutulis, which is responsible for the full and complete administration and day-to-day operations of the school.
In the spring of 2008, the position of provost was added, and the school was reorganized into six functional areas – academics, human resources, finance, facilities and construction, risk management and operations, and advancement – with a senior director overseeing each area. Collectively, this group, under John Krutulis’ direction, forms the school’s senior management team.
Accreditation
Gulliver is accredited by five agencies: the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS), the Florida Kindergarten Council (FKC), and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA). Accreditation, or certification, by these five agencies assure the Gulliver community and the college and university network that Gulliver Schools meets rigorous standards regarding curriculum, teacher credentials, safety, health, governance and finances.
Student life
More than 2,200 students are enrolled at Gulliver’s four campuses.

Age discrimination
In 2010, Gulliver did not renew the contract of longtime headmaster Patrick Snay, who promptly sued for age discrimination. Gulliver settled out of court in 2011, only to have the Third District Court of Appeal toss out the settlement after details of the settlement became public due to Snay's daughter bragging about her father winning the settlement on Facebook. The case is currently being appealed to the state supreme court.[8]
