Guillem Bauzà Mayol (born 25 October 1984) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Southern Football League Division One South & West side Merthyr Town. Bauzà can play as a striker, second striker or an attacking midfielder.
He has previously played for Mallorca B, Espanyol B, Swansea City, Hereford United, Northampton Town, and Exeter City and has represented Spain at under-16, under-17 and under-19 level.
Club career
Spain
Bauzà started his career at his hometown club Mallorca B. In his only game for Mallorca's first string side he partnered Samuel Eto'o in attack.[1] From there Bauzà moved to Spanish side Espanyol, where he would continue his development by playing for their 'B' team in the Spanish second division.
Swansea City
In the summer of 2007, Bauzà was signed by Swansea City. He was one of Spanish manager Roberto Martínez's first signings alongside Spanish defender Àngel Rangel.[2]
His first Swansea goals came against Dutch team Alphense Boys during the club's pre-season tour of the Netherlands. He scored twice in a 5–2 victory.[3] However, Bauzà took time to settle into the team as his only starts were in cup games. His first competitive goal came against Wycombe Wanderers in the Football League Trophy,[4] a strike which was enough to see the Swans into the next round. Bussy scored his first League goal for the Swans on 12 January 2008 in a 3–1 win at Kenilworth Road against Luton Town .[5]
Later that season, Bauzà wrote his name in the Swansea City history books when on 12 April 2008, he scored a brace of goals against Gillingham to secure the Swans' promotion to the Football League Championship.[6]
On 26 April 2008, he scored his first hat-trick for the Swans as they beat Leyton Orient 4-1 in the final game of the season.[7]
In the 2008-09 season, Bauzà scored 3 goals in 21 appearances.
In the 2009-10 Bauzà was restricted to just seven appearances all season as new manager Paulo Sousa signed five new strikers in an attempt to replace the goals of Wigan Athletic-bound Jason Scotland.
Bauzà was released from his contract on 14 May 2010 by Swansea City.
Post-Swansea City
Bauzà spent time on trial at Charlton Athletic,[8] where he featured in their first three pre-season friendlies, and Sparta Rotterdam but nothing came of it.[9]
On 16 September 2010, Bauzà signed a contract with League Two club Hereford United until January 2011.[10] On his debut Bauzà scored Hereford's penalty in a 1–1 draw with Bury.[11] Once January 2011 came Guillem left Hereford.
On 11 March 2011 Bauzà signed a monthly contract with fellow League Two club Northampton Town until the end of the season. Bauzà's impressive form earned him the offer of a new contract but it was rejected.[12]
On 15 May 2011, Bauzà joined League One side Exeter City on a free transfer. He was viewed as a direct replacement for the departing Ryan Harley.[13] Bauzà scored for Exeter on his competitive debut against Yeovil in the first round of the League Cup at St James Park. After two seasons, Bauzà was released by League Two side Exeter City on 30 April 2013. Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale suggested that a lack of funding had forced him to trim the size of the Exeter squad.[14]
In October 2013, Bauzà signed for Welsh Premier League side Port Talbot Town.[15]
International career
Bauzà [1] won the Under 16’s European Championships with Spain,[1] playing all 6 games alongside current A.C. Milan striker Fernando Torres. Bauzà has also represented Spain at Under 17 and Under 19 levels, again playing alongside Torres.[1]
