Gudivada is a census town, municipality and revenue division[1] in Krishna district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

History

Excavations in the nineteenth century at the stupa mound in Gudivada revealed three reliquaries from the 1st Century AD made of steatite and rock crystal that are now kept in the British Museum.[2]

The name Gudivada was derived from Gudi meaning Temple and Vada means Settlement or town in Telugu language. The presence of Habitation at this town may be dated back to 3rd Century BCE or 2nd Century BCE since the time of Sathavahanas as per some inscriptions.[3] Archaeological excavations[4] conducted at Gudivada yielded an ancient Buddhist Stupa Mound and Jain relics. Gudivada is religiously diversified small town with many Hindu Temples and important Jain Tirth[5] of Bhagawan Parshvanath located at market road.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Gudivada had a population of 178,289[6] up from 112,245 in the 2001 census.[7] Males constituted 49.83% of the population and females 50.17%. Gudivada had an average literacy rate of 82.16%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy was 86.39%, and female literacy was 77.98%. In Gudivada, 8.4% of the population was under 6 years of age.

Climate

Gudivada falls in the hot humid region of the country and it is less than 35 miles from Bay of Bengal. The climate of the town is very hot and it is pleasant during the winter. The hottest day falls in the month of May with shift to June during some years. The maximum temperature observed is 50.3C and the minimum temperature observed is 09.80C.

Transportation

Vijayawada is the nearest airport (25 km). Gudivada Railway Station and APSRTC bus station caters to public rail and road transport respectively.
