Gringo Star is an American indie rock group from Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

Origins

The group was founded in 2008 by brothers Nicholas and Peter Furgiuele, along with Peter Delorenzo and Matt McCalvin, later replaced by Christopher Kaufmann. Delorenzo left the band in 2012 and Kaufmann in 2013.

History

Gringo Star's critically acclaimed debut All Y'all was self-released in 2008 and subsequently distributed in Europe by Cargo Records.[1][2] It was produced by Grammy Award-winner Ben H. Allen. The album was rated one of the top albums of the decade and received many favorable reviews.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

The band signed to Brooklyn-based record label Gigantic Music for Count Yer Lucky Stars, released on October 25, 2011. It was also produced by Allen and engineered by James Salter. It, too, received high marks.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] The album made many lists for one of the best albums of the year.[29] The song "Shadow" from Count Yer Lucky Stars was featured on NPR's All Songs Considered in its 2011 Fall Music Preview.[30]

The band was featured in a 2011 award-winning documentary, Hurry up and Wait.[2][31]

The band released the album Floating Out To See that they recorded, mixed, and produced themselves, at Studio 234 Atlanta, released Oct 22, 2013, on their own label, My Anxious Mouth Records. This album, too, garnered positive attention, with some music writers picking it as one of the 10 best albums of the year and one saying that it was a "testament of what can be done if you take a risk or simply use your imagination."[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] Their song "Find a Love" from Floating Out to See was featured as the "Song of the Day" by KEXP.[40]

In 2014, Gringo Star released a 7 inch vinyl record issued by Dizzybird Records out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, featuring "Long Time Gone" and "World of Spin," the latter premiered by Paste Magazine on September 18, 2014.[41][42]

Gringo Star announced in March 2015 the band had completed its fourth full-length album, yet to be named and released. Finalization of the album dovetails with the band's upcoming tour in April and May 2015, in support of Brian Bell's (Weezer) band, The Relationship. Following that, the band will tour with Dreamers, with whom the Gringos will play with in May and June 2015, from Kansas City to Brooklyn.[43]

Gringo Star has been profiled in Spin and several times has recorded at Daytrotter and Paste Magazine.[44][45][46][47][48][49]

Live performances

Gringo Star has shared the stage with numerous other groups and musicians, including Best Coast, the Black Lips, and J Roddy Walston and the Business.[50][51][52] In 2012 the band played the Super Bowl Village.[53] Gringo Star has played many music festivals, including Lollapalooza,[54][55] Secret Stages,[56] Bunbury,[57] Forecastle,[58] SunFest [59] at the Big Guava Festival in May 2014, and they will soon be appearing at the Northside Festival in Brooklyn from June 12 to June 14, 2014.[60][61] They have been perennials at SXSW.[62][63]
