Gregor Balažic (born 12 February 1988) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays for Serbian SuperLiga club Partizan, as a central defender.

Balažic represented his country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level, before making his senior side debut in 2013.

Club career

Born in Murska Sobota, Balažic came through the youth academy of Mura, a now-defunct club. He made his first team debut in a 2–1 home league win over Zagorje on 30 April 2005, aged 17, during the club's last competitive season, before it was dissolved.

In the summer of 2005, Balažic was transferred to Benfica. He played exclusively for their youth teams in the following two seasons.

In June 2007, Balažic moved to Spain and signed with Espanyol. He was initially registered for their B side.[1] However, in August 2007, Balažic eventually joined Spanish lower-league club Águilas.[2] He made two appearances in the Segunda División B, before suffering a knee injury,[3] which resulted in the termination of his contract in December 2007.[4]

In the winter of 2008, Balažic returned to Slovenia and signed for top-tier club Gorica. He made 72 league appearances and scored two goals, before leaving the club.

In January 2011, Balažic was transferred to Ukrainian club Karpaty Lviv, penning a four-year deal. He made 79 league appearances and scored seven goals, before his contract expired.

On 4 February 2015, Balažic signed a two-year contract with Partizan.[5]

International career

Balažic made his senior debut for Slovenia in a 1–0 home friendly win over Canada on 19 November 2013. His second cap for the team came in another friendly game, on 7 June 2014, a 0–2 loss to Argentina in La Plata.
