Green Run High School is a public secondary school located at 1700 Dahlia Drive of the Green Run area of suburban Virginia Beach, Virginia. Green Run hosts a very diverse student population many of which come from the large concentration of military families that have moved into the area within the past couple of decades. The school was the largest high school in Virginia when it opened in 1979, with 247,000 feet of space. When it was first opened, it had the largest enrollment in the state, which accounted for much athletic success, especially soccer and track. Due to changing demographics and the ensuing addition of new schools, the school is now one of the smallest when it comes to student body population. This is a highly structured and professionally run school, making it one of the best in the city, and denouncing its previous nicknames. Construction cost totaled $11.4 million.

In April 2010, it was announced that Green Run High School was one of three high schools nationwide to be awarded the 2010 College Board Inspiration Award winners for improving their academic environments and helping under-served students achieve equitable access to higher education. The prize includes a $25,000 award presented by The College Board.[1]

On July 13, 2012, President Obama visited Green Run as part of his Presidential Campaign. Hundreds of people packed the gymnasium to hear him speak. Local news stations WVEC, Wavy, and WTKR showed the speech on live webcasts on their websites. Ever since then, Green Run High School has become one of the most popular High Schools in Virginia Beach. [2]

Green Run High School now has a Collegiate program.

School Administration

History

Green Run High School was opened in 1979 and is one of three Virginia Beach schools that can be traced back to the Algonquin settlements. The land was previously used for fox hunting by the Princess Anne Hunt Club, as a garden for the Norfolk City jail, and was owned later by a Mennonite Farming family until it was sold in the 1960s.

If they say a school is just a school,

Then please let me explain

The feelings we have

The friendships that remain.

Oh, if only we could tell you what is

Running through our minds;

The memories that we have

Of years at Green Run High.

And when we're gone,

To Green Run we'll be true,

A part of us

Belongs to you.

All the love and hope we found here

Always seems to overcome

The tension and the fears

We met throughout the years.

Yes, and when the sands of time continue

Swiftly passing by,

We hope you'll understand,

We'll never say goodbye.

And when we're gone,

To Green Run we'll be true,

A part of us

Will always stay with you! [7]
