History

The service was named and run by Rochdale Corporation Transport, from 1964 up until the 1970s when it was taken over by SELNEC. In the 1980/90s it was run by GM Buses before FirstGroup took over the company. The number 17 is one of the few remaining numbers from the original numbering system of Rochdale Corporation Transport.[2]
