Grace Chan (Chinese: 陳凱琳) (born 23 June 1991) is a Hong Kong-born Canadian actress and beauty pageant titleholder, who would represent Hong Kong at Miss World 2014.[1] She is the winner of Miss Chinese International Pageant 2014 and Miss Hong Kong 2013 Beauty pageants.[2][3]

Because of her facial features, Grace was speculated to be a mixed Chinese. Grace clarified that both her biological parents are ethnically Chinese.[4][5][6]

Miss Hong Kong

Right from the beginning of the pageant, Grace expressed that it was her childhood dream to enter the Miss Hong Kong pageant. After completing her university studies, Grace immediately returned to Hong Kong for the pageant; she even sacrificed her own graduation ceremony in Vancouver.

This year's pageant voting system differed from the past as the committee introduced a one-vote-one-person from Hong Kong citizens which would account for 50 percent of the final score; the other 50 percent was awarded by the panel of professional judges.

As an early favourite, Grace beat the other nine contestants by gaining a majority of the 170,000 votes that were cast from the Hong Kong audience.[7] Before the final, Grace won other awards during the competition including Miss Photogenic, the Tourism Ambassador Award, the Media's Favorite Award, the Audience's Favorite Award, and the Best Debate team. As part of a publicity stunt, pageant organizers had all 20 Miss Hong Kong 2013 candidates participate in Sports Competition, in which she topped and grabbed gold in the running competition.

Finally, after various rounds she was crowned the 2013 Miss Hong Kong winner on September 1, 2013.

Miss Chinese International

The 2014 Miss Chinese International Pageant was held on Sunday, January 26, at TVB City, where after rounds of competition, Grace Chan from Hong Kong was crowned the winner.

Organizers this year decided to change the formula of the competition and introduced an elimination round after nearly every segment. Grace Chan presented her confidence and charm throughout the show and answered her questions. The most memorable segment was when Grace was asked by host, Eric Tsang, what she would do if she woke up one morning and found out she turned into a man. Grace replied: "What a great opportunity for me to join the Mr. Hong Kong pageant next year!" The judges and the audience were impressed by her wittiness and fast thinking.

One of the most unexpected moments was when Grace performed her talent segment wherein she played the flute and sang Joey Yung's 'My Pride'. The hosts introduced her segment as a flute performance, so when Grace transitioned from the flute to singing, it was a surprise for everyone. Even vocal coach and host, Eric Moo, complimented Grace's singing.[8]

Not only did Grace Chan represented herself well in the pageant, she is also the 3rd representative from Hong Kong who has held both titles, the last title belonging to Sonia Kwok 14 years ago.

Her mission as Miss Chinese International 2014 is to continue giving hope and inspire others with her work.[9]

Personal life

Born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia at the age of 5, Grace graduated from Simon Fraser University with a major in Communications[10] and a minor in Publishing.

It has been speculated that Grace comes from a wealthy family background. The media fuelled rumours that she currently lives in a villa worth over 100 million HKD owned by her paternal grandmother in Kowloon Tong. However, Grace denies that she is rich, and claims she comes from a middle-class family, and is happy and comfortable with her home and lifestyle. Grace has a fraternal twin brother and an older sister.[11]
