The Government Degree College for Boys is the educational Institute of South Kashmir is one of the biggest college of J&K state headquartered in Anantnag. It was established in 1950 as an intermediate college in the heart of Anantnag town.

Facilities Available

Library

There is a library housed in a newly constructed building having about 56,000 books, covering asll the fields and streams of the information. The need of the updated information is realized by regular subscriptions of local, national and international magazines, journals, periodicals, newsletters, news and views and news dailies. The reading room, which remains open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, has reprographic and book bank facilities. Some departments particularly Science have departmental libraries. The students and Teachers get ready reference books from these Libraries in addition to data books regarding specific areas of interests. The automation of the central Library is explored and a servay in this regard is being launched.

Physical Education

The College has very good facilities for almost all commonly played indoor and outdoor games. For outdoor games there are spacious fields for cricket, football, hockey and volleyball. Indoor games like carrom and table tennis are also played in the college. The department prepares talented sportsmen for participating in the state and national events. The College prepares calendar of sports activities at the beginning of every academic session.

Health Care Centre

The College has health care centre providing first aid medical facility inside campus. The college has a health care commity headed by a competent teacher from chemistry or zoology departments, which looks after this center. In case of any emmergency District Hospital Anantnag is contacted or the case shifted there.

EDUSAT

The College recently received EDU-SAT interaction facilities. This will enable the Colleges, nationwide, to share skill of resourceful persons in different fields of art, science and commerce. This will benefit the students in remote areas who do not get proper guidance due to the lack of subject experts there. The equipment will be installed soon.

Financial Aid

The college provides financial aid to the students with economically disadvantaged status and other specified categories, after calling application from the deserving students. These applications are scrutinized by the financial aid commity. It has been learnt that a bulk of students apply for the aid. Due to the fact the deserved students are deprived of this aid facility. As such the students before applying for the financial aid should ask to their conscience whether they deserve it or not.

IGNOU Study Centre

A study center of Indira Gandhi Open University is also available in the College, which gets managing, infrastructural, academic and technical support from the college on Saturdays, Sundaysand Holidays. More than 500 students from this region avail this facility every year. The study centre is unique in J&K State to have direct link to ISRO Hyderabad.

Alumni Association

The College has an alumni association of its old students under the name "Kahkashan". The association has been set up to look after the quality sustenance of the college academics in addition to its role of working for the improvement of same.

College Hostel

The College Hostel which provides accommodation to at least 120 students per session. Unfortunately the hostel being occupied by security forces, the students from far-off places have to make their own arrangements at higher cost and less convenience. The college authorities are hopeful of getting it vacated very soon.
