Government College, Chittur

Government College Chittur is one of the oldest and famous educational institutions in Kerala. The College is affiliated to the University of Calicut and is a special grade College under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala. The college has been accredited by NAAC with B grade with a CGPA of 2.79. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in Science, Arts and Commerce subjects. Nearly 1400 Students study across all departments in an academic year.

History

The college was established on 11 August 1947. It started functioning in the present forty acre campus on the bank of serene Sokanasini (also known as Chittur Puzha) since 1954.

In 2007, The Department of Mathematics has got a support of Rs 10 Lakh(Approximate), from Department of Science and Technology (DST), of Government of India, under their FIST Programme. The Department of Mathematics is first such department in arts and science colleges of Kerala, getting this fund.

In 2014, The college has got again the same funding of Rs. 1 Crore (Mainly for the Departments of Mathematics and Geography) for improving the facilities in lab, buying software etc.

Also in 2014, department of Mathematics is obtained a funding of ₨ 12 lakh from KSCSTE of Government of Kerala, under their scheme Selective Augumentation of Research and Development.

Vision

महाजनो येन गत : स पन्था – The path traveled by great people is the right path – is the motto inscribed in the logo of the college.

The vision of the college is to provide its students an environment conducive to the acquisition of an outlook and knowledge that would enable them to tread the path trodden by great people.

Locations

College is just 17 km away from Palakkad town where it will take less than 1 hour to reach the college from town. Bus accessibility to reach college is very good.

Mission

1. To provide a wholesome education in various disciplines.

2. To train the students to approach knowledge with a spirit of enquiry and questioning, rather than a limited aim of memorizing and rote-learning.

3. To motivate youth in the rural-agrarian environs of the college to pursue higher education and ambitious career goals, with such a pursuit resulting in their all round development and increased participation in the larger global economy.

4. To provide access to higher education to financially and socially backward students, thereby motivating them to seek and achieve the objectives outlined above.

5. To impart value based education and make the students self-motivated and socially and politically conscious individuals who would be an asset to society and the nation.

Departments

There are 14 departments, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Electronics, Geography, History, Malayalam, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Tamil, Zoology offers Undergraduate Courses.

Commerce, Economics, Geography, Philosophy, Mathematics, Music, and Tamil departments offer PG courses also. Departments of Tamil , Philosophy , Music and Mathematics are Research Departments of University of Calicut.
