Gottorfer Codex

Anemones in the work

The Gottorfer Codex (German) or gottorpske kodeks or codex (Danish) is a work in four volumes commissioned by Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp between 1649 and 1659. The 365 illustrated pages and 1200 plants in gouache on parchment were made by Hans Simon Holtzbecker from Hamburg. Flowers were sent to Holtzbecker, who worked in both Schleswig and Holstein.

After Frederick III's death, the work on the codex stopped. In 2009, a digital version of the codex were made available at Gottorp Slot in southern Schleswig and at Statens Museum for Kunst.
