Google Cardboard is a fold-out cardboard smartphone mount that, when combined with lenses, a magnet, a piece of hook-and-loop fastener and a rubber band and held against the face, affords a virtual reality experience.[1] A smartphone with stereoscopic display software fits into this device and the lenses allow a person to perceive left and right images as a single three-dimensional image. The headset is designed by Google, but there is no official manufacturer or vendor for the device. Instead, Google has the list of parts, schematics, and assembly instructions freely available on their website, recommending people assemble one themselves from readily available parts. The hardware was announced at Google I/O in June 2014.

The official Google Cardboard SDK uses OpenGL.[2] There is an unofficial CardboardSDK iOS port.

In addition, there are Google Chrome VR Experiments implemented using WebGL; phones supporting WebGL can run Google's web experiments.[3] Apple's iOS 8 supports WebGL, and thus Chrome VR Experiments.[4] Third-party apps are available on the Google Play store with Cardboard support.[5]

David Coz and Damien Henry, Google engineers at the Google Cultural Institute in Paris, invented Cardboard in their "20% time".[6]

In November 2014, Volvo released Volvo-branded Cardboard goggles and an Android app, Volvo Reality, to let the user explore the XC90. [7]
