Gonzalo Orihuela (born 1980, Pretoria, South Africa) is an South African born Argentine blogger and choreographer of Argentine tango. He is regarded as part of the vanguard of scenic tango, and he is best known for his pieces created with the group Kambras.
Early life
His parents are both Argentine. In 1987 the family moved back to Argentina from Pretoria and located in Gral. Roca, Patagonia. As a teenager he studied electric bass. At age 19 he started studying drama, first with Lala Vega and then at the IUPA. The same year he started learning Tango.
Career
In 2001 he moved to Buenos Aires. After a bit more than year he reached Gustavo Naveira, Mariano Frumboli and Julio and Corina’s lessons.
He first partnered with a dancer Adriana Duré with whom he toured Europe twice in 2004. Shortly after, in 2005, he started performing with Solange Chapperon with whom he worked for the next 6 years.
In 2005 together with Solange and several colleagues he opened El Club Experimental de Tango Arte (CETA) in a space provided by the Latin American hostel chain ‘Che Lagarto’.
Together with performers: Gimena Salzman, Luciana Brillantino, Monica Romero, Laura Beneitez, Diego Mauriño, Julián Rodriguez Orihuela, Cristian Miño, Giggio Giovani, Ismael Ludman, Ramiro Rosenvasser, Juan Manoel Fernández, Sesé Dal Molin and Matias Morelli he created the piece Resurreción. A modern tango show based on electronic tango music from groups such as Tanghetto, Bajofondo and Narcotango, besides non tango groups such as Massive Attack. The piece included live drums, tango-airdance pieces, a fusion of flamenco and tango and a clown mingled in between the sensual tango choreographies.
The project was shortly after suspended due to severe changes in municipal law concerning the 2004 burn of República Cromañón nightclub
In 2007 in residence at the Katakomben Theater in Essen he created together with Armin Arabi, Solange Chapperon, Eladia Córdoba and Martin Lorenzo the first choreographies and the structure of what later would become El Sonido de las Caricias. Called by himself “my most 'milonguero friendly' piece”.
From 2010 to 2012 he partnered with Lucía Mazer.
In 2011, together with Inma Serrano, Solange Chapperon and Julián Rodriguez Orihuela, he transformed what used to be CETA into Kambras.
In 2012 he premiered the piece CRAM.
Currently he’s plays are performed in Buenos Aires and once a year the company tours Europe.
As a dancer he has kept a low profile since 2011 while focusing on developing as a choreographer and a teacher.
