Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world to improve their handwashing habits by washing their hands with soap at critical moments throughout each day. It takes place on October 15 of each year. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of handwashing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

GHD was created at the annual World Water Week 2008, which was held in Stockholm from August 17 to 23 and initiated by the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW). The first Global Handwashing Day took place on October 15, 2008, the date appointed by the UN General Assembly in accordance with year 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation.[1]

The theme for Global Handwashing Day’s inaugural year was Focus on School Children. The members pledged to get the maximum number of school children handwashing with soap in more than 70 countries.

Background

The campaign was initiated to reduce childhood mortality rates related respiratory and diarrheal diseases by introducing simple behavioral changes, such as handwashing with soap. This simple, accessible action can, according to research, reduce the rate of mortality from these diseases by almost 50 per cent.[2]

Importance of the movement

Hand washing with soap is the single most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARI), as automatic behavior performed in homes, schools, and communities worldwide. Pneumonia, a major ARI, is the number one cause of mortality among children under five years old, taking the life of an estimated 1.8 million children per year. Diarrhea and pneumonia together account for almost 3.5 million child deaths annually.[3] According to the official site, turning hand washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet into an ingrained habit was projected to save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention, cutting deaths from diarrhea by almost half and deaths from acute respiratory infections by one-quarter. Handwashing is usually integrated together with other sanitation interventions as part of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes.

Implementation and management

The Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap (PPPHW) established Global Handwashing Day in 2008 as a way to promote a global and local vision of handwashing with soap. Members of the PPPHW include the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); Procter & Gamble; the University at Buffalo; FHI 360; Unilever; the Water Supply & Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC); the Hygiene Centre at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM); and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[4] Resource for information and activities for the event are coordinated through its official website. Updates and tools are also available on the PPPHW’s Twitter Account (@handwashingsoap) and the Global Handwashing Day Facebook page (facebook.com/globalhandwashingday).

In 2013, the PPPHW hosted the first-ever virtual Global Handwashing Day celebration via Google Hangout. The PPPHW also debuted a new video collaboration with Sesame Street.

In each country where activities are planned, a convening institution brings together other organizations that have an interest in handwashing to coordinate activities. The 70 countries include: Afghanistan, Angola, UAE, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bolivia, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Colombia, Comoros, Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, The Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, Laos, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Timor Leste, Uganda, United Kingdom, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The results were collected and published as "The state of our handwashing 2012" with infographs before Global Handwashing Day. It found that half of people surveyed wash their hands less than 20 seconds. We named this activity 'fake handwashing'. It also found that the most forgotten placed to be washed is around the thumb; 34.5% don't wash there. Women wash hands better and more frequently than men; boys aged 0–9 mostly wash their hands in 5 seconds.

Voices from researchers: "I didn't care about handwashing before. But I'm changed after the survey." "I should be a coach on proper handwashing for my family and friends." They were motivated to protect their health with handwashing! Some schools did the survey by health club students. A nursing teacher said "Saying 'wash your hands' are not enough, we should tell them where you should wash."

JCU prepared posters, handbook, and DVD for free. On the website, much content can be downloaded included "handmade bubble-hat" to enjoy handwashing and dance for children. These were used freely at many kindergarten, nursing schools, elementary schools and homes.

To celebrate Global Handwashing Day, many events were also organized. Mr. Kaiji Moriyama, a dancer who choreograph "Global Handwashing Dance", demonstrated it to children and families.

Make-believe "germs" were also applied strategically in areas the children may typically touch. A black light was used to show how these fake "germs" could still be on their hands if they didn't wash their hands properly : water, soap, rub, scrub, rinse, and dry for at least 20 seconds (or singing "Happy Birthday" twice). The children return demonstration how to wash their hands. The soap on your hands goes sud, sud, sud. And the germs go down the drain.) Each child received a packet with 4 crayons, several coloring pages re-enforcing germs and hand washing, a small "toy germ" and information to their parents to review at home.
