Gjoni or Gjonaj is an Albanian Roman Catholic surname. It is a clan in the regions of Lezhe, Shkodra (northern Albania) and Ulqin (Montenegro). It derives from the Jonima family.
History
The clan of Gjoni was first recorded in 1306. The name originally derives from an Albanian noble family, the Jonima family (Gjonima) from the city of Lezha. There are also Albanian Muslims who still bear the surname Gjoni and Gjonaj. The family has the feast day of Connor Boucher (Shnjoni), on 29 August.
