Giorgos Stathakis (Greek: Γιώργος Σταθάκης; born 8 November 1953) is a Greek politician. On 27 January 2015 he was appointed the Minister of Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism in the government of Alexis Tsipras. The responsibility of Stathakis is to oversee tourism, transport and shipping.[1]
Before Stathakis was appointed minister, he was professor of political economy at the University of Crete.[1]
Career
Giorgos Stathakis, graduated from University of Athens in 1976 with degree in Economics. In 1978 he received M.A. in Economics from Newcastle University Ph.D. in Economics from the same University.
He was a visiting researcher at Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Queens College, City University of New York (1987/88) and a visiting scholar at Center for European Studies, Harvard University (1992/93).
In 1988 he became a professor of political economy at the University of Crete (lecturer in 1988, associate professor in 1992 and professor in 1997).[2]
