Gibraltar High School is a public high school in the unincorporated community of Fish Creek, Town of Gibraltar, Door County, Wisconsin, United States.[1][2] It serves grades 7-12 and is a part of the Gibraltar Area Schools.
It previously was known as Gibraltar High School and served grades 9 through 12.[2]
History
The founding of the school dates to 1917, when the townspeople decided to establish the first high school in the county outside Sturgeon Bay.[3] In 1941, two student athletes from Gibraltar High School's Future Farmers of America drowned while taking part in an annual camping trip.[4] In 1983, 1984, and 1985, the school hosted the Peninsula Music Festival in the auditorium.[5][6][7] Door County Idol auditions were held at the school in 2012.[8]
Overview
Gibraltar High School is part of the Gibraltar Area School District,[1] and draws students from Gills Rock, Ellison Bay, Sister Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, and Baileys Harbor.[2] Situated adjacent to Peninsula State Park, the school is in the Gibraltar Secondary School building, which also contains Gibraltar Middle School. The student-teacher ratio is 11:1.[1]
Student body
Of the 198 students in 2011, 52% were female, and 5% were minorities.[1] As of 2012, the school had 191 students.[9]
Curriculum
The school offers Advanced Placement courses; 49% of the students are enrolled in at least one of these courses.[1]
Sports
The school's mascot is the Viking, and the school colors are blue and gold.[10] Varsity sports include boys' football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and wrestling, and girls' basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball.[11] The school has a baseball field that includes a bullpen, dugouts, restrooms, a locker room, and a press box.[12]
In 1940, the Gibraltar High School boys' basketball team won the peninsula championship.[4] In 1971, the school's ski team finished second in the state competition.[13] As of 2012, the football team is coached by Pat Keehan.[10] In 2012 the Packerland Conference Cross Country Championship was held at the school, with the boys' and girls' teams both finishing second.[14]
The school's track facility is adjacent to Peninsula State Park, the location of the annual Door County Half Marathon.[15]
