Life
Giannino Castiglioni was born on 4 May 1884 in Milan Italy, the son of Giacomo and Piera Bergamaschi. His father was director of the mint Stabilimento Stefano Johnson.[2]
Giannino received his education at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan where he graduated in 1906. He started his career as a young artist for the 1906 International Exhibition in Milan.[3] Giannino Castiglioni stayed in Milan, and a few years later he married Livia Bubble, the daughter of a school teacher. His children Livio (1911), Pier Giacomo (1913) and Achilles (1918) were born in the same street where he himself was born.[4] Giannino operated a second study from his home at Lierna, Como, Italy in 1927,[3] and then spent his life here until he died on 27 August 1971, and he is buried there.[5][6]
Work
- 1906: As a young graduate Giannino Castiglioni won the competition for the prize medal at the Milan International Exhibition. He also exhibited some of his medal creations, and paintings. Soon after, he treated painting more as a hobby, and concentrated his work on the sculpture of medals.
- 1922: He won the international competition for the monumental decoration of the Montevideo Parliament of Uruguay.
- 1925: From the mid-twenties on, he concentrated more on the creation of monuments, than on medals. He received many public commissions for war memorials, fountains, and tombs.[7]
- 1935: Under the Italian Fascists he worked as the sculptor for the war cemeteries of Monte Grappa, Timava (1937), and the war memorial of Redipuglia (1938).[3]
- 1941: Tomb of Pope Pius XI at the Vatican Grottoes
- 1966: The Crucifix, Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, Dolgellau, Wales.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad. His sculptural productions in total consist of more than seven hundred items, too many to be all included in an encyclopaedia. During his long career as a medallist, Giannino remained faithful to Art Nouveau, the style he was educated in.
