Ghosi is a town and Adarsh Nagar Panchayat in Mau district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Ghosi is situated 137 kilometres (85 mi) from Varanasi. It is known for the UP State Government Sugar Mill and for the World's biggest Tazias (a model/copy of Imam Hussain Shrine).

Demographics
As of 2001's India census,[2] Ghosi had a population of 35,833. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Ghosi has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 57%. In Ghosi, 19% of the population is under 6 years of age. The main source of people's income is agriculture and business.

History
Ghosi was named Raja in 1535. The city is known throughout India by the name "Madinat ul-Ulama", after the large proportion of Islamic scholars and seminaries to be found there.
