Ghanchi

Ghanchi (Modh/Modi/Sahu/Sahoo/Teli/Ganiga/Gandhi) is a vaishya caste found in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and various parts of India.[1][2] Ghanchi caste has furthur many Gotra (Clan) which includes Gahlot, Borana, Sahu, Solanki, Bhati, Panwar, Parihar, Chauhan, Dayya, Devra, Dhandia, Nikub Parmar, Parihariya, Parmar, Sankhla & Surecha .[3] The Modh Ghanchi sub-caste is an Other Backward Class (OBC).[4] The Sahu, Teli, Ganiga and other OBC, are related castes found in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.[5]

Origin

The name is of Indian origin, and means a businessman (producer and seller of oils) (Teli). The surname is commonly found in Ahmedabad, Navsari, Surat, Valsad, Bilimora as well as Ghanchi, Modh Ghanchi (Originally from Modhera, Gujarat), Saurashtra, Amreli, Bagasra, Bilkha, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Kalol, Kadi, parts of Rajasthan Jodhpur, Pali, Sojat, Sumerpur, Mumbai.[6] Those of the Gandla cast who extract oil from oil seed are known as the Gandla community.
