Gerad Ali Dable (Somali: Geraad Cali Dable, Arabic: جراد علي طبلي) was the 13th Sultan of the Warsangali Sultanate, reigning from 1491 to 1503.
Biography
Dable was born in the historical city of Las Khorey in northern Somalia, where he lived until the age of five.
A rebellion within the Warsangali Sultanate then took place, with the Awramale sub-clan of the Warsangali Darod assuming leadership. History tells us that the young prince escaped the rebels when some servants hid him, dispatching him on a boat to Aden where he would remain until the age of 25.
Dable later earned the nickname of Ali Dable (the word Dable in the Somali language means "the one with the fire"), because when he returned to Somalia from exile in Yemen, he brought along with him cannon fire.
Legend has it that Dable then managed to get back his hereditary throne and to unite his then divided clan. The Sultan then invaded Dhulbahante territory, and allied himself with Dhulbahante rebels to defeat the Gerad of Dhulbahante's troops in the Battle of Garadag.
Dable was succeeded as Sultan by his eldest son, Gerad Liban.
