George Miles (politician)

George James Gallup Warden Miles, (b. Fremantle, Western Australia 8 May 1873; d. 29 June 1952, Perth, Western Australia) was the Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for the province of North-West from 1916 to 1950. He married his wife Nellie in 1906. His particular interest was the development of the North-West. He participated in the gold rushes in the 1890's and later settled at Marble Bar, where he became interested in politics and the development of the North-West. In 1916 he was elected to the Legislative Council as a member for the North Province. He held this position for 33 years, until Mr. H. C. Strickland succeeded him in 1950. During the early part of his political life he urged the establishment of the now disbanded Port Hedland-Marble Bar railway and the mining of iron ore from Cockatoo Island, Yampi Sound. For many years Mr. Miles was a member of the W.A. Cricket Association and was its president from 1939 to 1951. His great niece Jo Vallentine served as a Senator for Western Australia.
