George Jackson (conductor)

George Jackson (born 15 July 1987) is a British conductor.

Career

George Jackson was born in London in 1987. He came to the notice of the public for stepping in at the last minute to conduct the Austrian premiere of Michael Jarrell's Ombres with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, thus making his debut at Vienna's Musikverein.[1] He studied at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the Liszt School of Music Weimar, also attending the Lucerne Festival Academy. Jackson was awarded Second Place at the 2012 Jeunesses Musicales International Conducting Competition in Bucharest,[2] and also served as Assistant Conductor to the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra.[3]

George Jackson has conducted a range of orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra,[4] the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Strings, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the MSM Symphony in New York.[5] He was awarded both the David A. Karetsky Memorial Fellowship and the Robert J. Harth Conducting Prize at Aspen Music Festival, and also received scholarships from the Richard Wagner Foundation at Bayreuth,[6] the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine,[7] the Musicians' Benevolent Fund and Arts Council of Ireland. George was elected as an Emerging Excellence Artist by Help Musicians UK,[8] and became the first conductor to receive Austrian Radio station Ö1's Talentbörse award in 2014.[9]
