George Denison Faber, 1st Baron Wittenham CB DL (14 December 1852 – 1 February 1931) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom.

Background

Faber was the second surviving son of Charles Wilson Faber and the nephew of Lord Grimthorpe.^[1] He was the brother of Edmund Faber, 1st Baron Faber, and of Mrs Edward Kennard (1850–1936), a novelist.

Political career

Faber was Member of Parliament (MP) for York from 1900 to January 1910,^[2] when he lost his seat,^[1] and for Clapham from 1910 to 1918.^[3]

He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1905.^[4]

On 29 June 1918, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Wittenham, of Wallingford in the County of Berkshire.^[5]

Personal life

Lord Wittenham married Hilda Georgina, daughter of Sir Frederick Graham, 3rd Baronet, of Netherby in Cumberland, in 1895. The marriage was childless.

He died on 1 February 1931, aged 78, when the barony became extinct.^[1] He is buried with his brother Edmund in Brompton Cemetery in London. The monument is currently (2014) concealed behind shrubbery on the east side of the main entrance path from the north but has had a low tunnel created through which it may be viewed.
