George Edmund Haynes
Dr. George Edmund Haynes (1881-1959/1960) was a co-founder and first executive director of the National Urban League.
Born and raised in Arkansas, Haynes migrated from Pine Bluff, Arkansas to New York City, where he would live most of his life. He received a sociology PhD from Columbia University, thus making him the first African-American to earn a PhD from Columbia. From 1918 to 1921, Haynes served as director of the Division of Negro Economics in the United States Department of Labor, thus becoming the first African-American to serve in a federal sub-cabinet post.
