George E. Donart

George E. Donart (February 27, 1889 – October 1, 1961) was a Democratic politician from Weiser, Idaho. He was the Democratic nominee in a 1946 special election for the United States Senate seat in Idaho to finish the term of John W. Thomas, who died in November 1945.

After Thomas' death, Democratic Gov. Charles C. Gossett resigned and allowed his successor Arnold Williams to appoint him to the Senate vacancy, which in turn allowed him to enter the special election race as the incumbent. During the 1946 primary Donart was endorsed by Idaho's other U. S. Senator at the time, Glen H. Taylor.^[1]

Donart defeated Gossett in the Democratic primary. He was in turn defeated in the general election by Republican Congressman Henry Dworshak.

Prior to his Senate run Donart served in the Idaho Legislature. He was a member of the Idaho State Senate from 1933 to 1940 and from 1943 to 1946.
