Geologisk Museum

Geologisk Museum is a museum of geology, located at Øster Voldgade at the northeast corner of the Botanic garden in Copenhagen.[1] In January 2004, it was incorporated into the newly established organization Statens Naturhistoriske Museum.

The collections date back to the 17th century and it has been part of the university museum since 1772. Its original location was Nørregade but in 1893 the museum moved into the current buildings, which were built for housing the museum. From 1810 to 1976 the name of the museum was Mineralogisk Museum[2]

The "Agpalilik" meteorite outside Geologisk Museum

The Agpalilik meteorite (Inuit for the man and also known as the Cape York meteorite) weighing some 20 tons was found at Cape York, Greenland, and can be seen in the museum yard. In the exhibition there is also a small rock from the Moon, brought back by the Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972 from the Taurus-Littrow region.
