Geneva Carr (born May 6, 1971) is an American television and stage actress, with an extensive acting resume, yet is best known for her role of the "mom" in AT&T Mobility's mobile phone commercials. She is currently performing on Broadway in the play Hand To God, for which she received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.[1][2]
Personal life
She was born in Mississippi, the daughter of George and Baynard Carr. She has two brothers, George Car II and Joseph Carr. She studied French at Mount Holyoke College and initially had a career in business before deciding to become an actress. She studied French in Paris and earned her MBA in Business from ESCP. She studied acting with Jane Hoffman at the Actors Studio. [3][4]
Rollover Mom
"Carr is the star" of a series of notable television commercial advertisements for AT&T's telephone service.[2] She "plays the mom of two sons and wife of a laid-back husband."[2] In one well-noted ad, "Carr quickly retrieves a set of rollover minutes, depicted as little orange and white clocks, from a yard sale that her family is hosting. A woman is bargaining to buy them, but when Carr realizes the rollover minutes are on the table, she grabs them and says they are not for sale. 'In these days, we can't afford to be wasteful,' she says."[2] The marketing of "ongoing value has had success ...."[2] The telephone company "intends to continue with Carr and crew and the existing theme for at least another ad ...."[2] Carr represents the "typical customer" of the service.[2]
