Gemma Ramsay is a fictional character from the Australian Network Ten soap opera Neighbours, played by Beth Buchanan. She made her first on-screen appearance on 20 June 1990 and departed on 25 July 1991.

Storylines

Gemma was caring, carefree and independent. After the death of her mother, her father struggled to cope and Gemma was sent to stay with relatives in Brisbane before moving in with her aunt Madge Bishop and her husband Harold Bishop in Erinsborough.

On her arrival, Gemma was cautious and reluctant to commit to a relationship as she had recently broken up with Aidan Devlin. She had several admirers and had a brief relationship with Ryan McLachlan before getting together with Matt Robinson. Gemma broke up with Matt after he took her for a ride on his new motorbike and crashed. She was rushed to hospital and nearly lost a leg due to the severity of the injury. Gemma forgave Matt but was not interested in continuing with the relationship. She had a brief romance with Glen Donnelly before falling in love with student doctor Adam Willis.

After successfully passing her Higher School Certificate, Gemma then became a vet and nearly lost her job after protesting against the use of animals in a circus. Gemma was offered a job at an animal sanctuary in Newcastle, New South Wales. Gemma was a very environmentally minded and 'Green' person like the vegetarian Harold Bishop, Melanie Pearson, her animal-loving friend Melissa Jarrett, Cody Willis and the environmentalist/Animal rights crusader Kerry Bishop.

After a tearful and heartbreaking goodbye to Madge, Harold and Adam, Gemma left Ramsay Street behind for a new life in Newcastle, and she was joined by Adam a month later, after which they began a serious relationship with each other. Adam and Gemma were last heard of in 1996 as engaged.

Reception

Ruth Deller of television website Lowculture gave Gemma a 2 out of 5 for her contribution to Neighbours, during a feature called "A guide to recognising your Ramsays and Robinsons".[1] Deller said "Tom's second daughter (there's also Moira, who was never in the show) Gemma filled a Charlene-sized gap when she moved in with Madge in the early 90s. She went out with two members of the Robinson clan (Glen and Matt), but eventually left to be with goody-goody Adam Willis".[1] The BBC said Gemma's most notable moment was "Being involved in a motorbike accident with Matt Robinson."[2]
