Geeta Kapoor is an Indian choreographer, in Hindi films (Bollywood), and is one of the three judges for the Indian reality dance talent show, Dance India Dance – Season 2, who are also mentors to the show's 18 dancers, called 'Masters'.[1]
Early life and training
Growing up, she was interested in Hindi movies and particularly the song and dance numbers. Early on, she took lessons in Indian classical dancing.
Career
Geeta Kapoor started her career when she joined the troupe of noted Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan at just 15,[2] later went on to assisting her in many films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Mohabbatein, Kal Ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om etc. and even the musical Bombay Dreams (2004),[3] and has lent choreography to many Bollywood films likeFiza (2000), Asoka (2000), Saathiya (2002), Heyy Babyy (2007) and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008), Alladin (2009), Tees Maar Khan's Sheila Ki Jawani' (2010), Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya(2011),Shirin Farhad Ki Nikal Padi(2012) .[4][5] Geeta Kapoor has also choreographed award ceremonies, concerts like Temptation Reloaded and has also choreographed the opening ceremony of Pepsi IPL 2013 .
Starting out as a secondary, background dancer in many song sequences (e.g., song 'Dum Tara' of Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, Song 'Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aaye' from movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Gori Gori from Main Hoon Na), she stood out through her persistence on some a mix of classical and modern dance moves. Starting in the late 1990s, through her connections in the Hindi movie industry, she got some early projects to impart her dance skills in movies such as 'Nayak'. She also appeared in kuch kuch hota hai for about 5 seconds. Geeta Kapur made her television debut with the reality show Dance India Dance on Zee TV in the year 2008, where her co-judges were choreographers Terrence Lewis and Remo D'Souza. Mithun Chakrabarty was the grand master. She trained a group which was called Geeta Ki Gang.
In 2009, she appeared on the Season 2 reality dance talent show, Dance India Dance (Zee TV), along with choreographers, Terrence Lewis, Remo D'Souza as a judge, as well as a mentors, where they trained 18 contestants in dance forms like ballet, acrobatics, mid-air dancing, contemporary, Bollywood and hip-hop.[6] Next she made a special appearance in the show DID lil masters, in which her mentor Farah Khan and Sandip Soparkar were the judges, during auditions as well as in a special episode. Her next TV outing was as the judge of DID Doubles along with choreographers Marzi Pestonji and Rajiv Surti. Geeta Kapoor once again teamed with Terrence Lewis and Remo D'Souza to judge the third season of the highly acclaimed show Dance India Dance in which Rajasmita Kar, a member of her team, Geeta ki gang, won. In 2012, she was seen judging the second season of DID lil masters along with Marzi Pestonji. Geeta Kapoor was last seen as a judge of Dance Ke Superkids along with her own mentor Farah khan and Marzi. She was surrounded in controversy when she was arrested and released on bail after being booked under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt. She hit a stationery biker causing a fractured leg when she fumbled behind the wheel of her car on March 11,2015.[7]
Currently she is judging India's Dancing Superstar,[8] on STAR Plus.
