From 1052 Gebhard served as Count of Harzgau. He was married to Hedwig of Formbach, a daughter of Frederick, Count of Formbach. His posthumous child was Emperor Lothair III. He died 9 June 1075 in the battle of Langensalza during the Saxon Rebellion against troops loyal to the Emperor Henry IV.
