Gayen (also Gain, anglicized) is a Bengali title, also used as a surname.[1] It is mainly found in the Indian states of West Bengal and Assam, and also in Bangladesh. The surname Gahana (corrupt of Gayen) is also found amongst the Bengali community in Odisha.[2]
In Bengali, Gayen means 'singer'.[3] Historically, it was a title bestowed on singers and musicians, irrespective of their caste.[4]
