Gavin Turek (born April 19, 1987) is a singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress from Los Angeles, California. Her music has been described as "indie electropop"[1] and "electro-pop with a roller-disco sensibility." [2] She is well known for her collaborations with TOKiMONSTA.

Life and career

Turek's father is a classically trained pianist, and her mother is a singer.[3][4] She began training as a dancer at age 6, and by adolescence she was going to high school "specifically for dance." [2] Turek "was maybe 9 or 10" when she started writing songs with her sister.[4]

Before graduating from Scripps College in 2009, Turek spent half a year in India and 5 months in Ghana studying with a local dance company.[2] She was "mentally rocked" when she came home and turned to songwriting as a form of therapy.[2] Unsure of whether she wanted to pursue a career in music, Turek consulted her sister, Hana, who put some of the demos online.[1][2] From there she was discovered by TOKiMONSTA, with whom she's collaborated multiple times.[1][2]

Turek is often praised for her energetic stage presence.[1][5] She's cited old performance footage of Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and Donna Summer as inspiration for her own performances.[1]

Turek independently released The Break-Up Tape on August 19, 2013.
