Gary Womersley

Gary Womersley is a Scottish National Party politician and a councillor on Clackmannanshire Council for the Clackmannanshire Central ward.

Womersley was first elected to the Council in the Scottish local elections, 2007 securing 620 first preferences and taking the third and final seat in the ward. After the elections he became the SNP Group Leader and Leader of the Opposition to the minority Scottish Labour Party administration. On 15 December 2011 Labour Cllr Eddie Carrick resigned after he was not selected to contest the next set of local elections. This left the SNP and Labour numbers equal.[1] Carrick ultimately supported the SNP with the result that Womersley became Council Leader on 6 January 2012.[2] In the Scottish local elections, 2012 he secured 661 first preferences, exceeding the quota and taking the second seat in the ward, but failing to bring in a running-mate.

After the local elections he was re-elected Group Leader of the SNP and Leader of the Council with the support of Independent Cllr Archie Drummond. The Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party Cllr abstained on the vote.
